A hot tub is a fantastic way to let go of the stresses of everyday life and spend quality time with your loved ones. But just as your spa will help look after you, it’s important that you look after your spa.
Looking After Your Hot Tub
Hot tubs require maintenance. But don’t worry! Hot Tub World will do everything we can to make sure you feel equipped with all the right knowledge to take care of your hot tub. We talk you through everything you need to know when we install the spa, and after that we’re only ever a phone call away if advice is needed.
In this blog however, we thought we’d give a brief overview of some of the key elements of spa maintenance, starting today with draining and filling. Later on, we’ll also cover other elements such as filter cleaning and water chemistry.
Please be aware that this is not a comprehensive list of all maintenance requirements and is only intended as a rough guide.
Filling and draining
The spa can be filled simply by using a hose pipe. It’s best to drop the hose pipe into the filter box area, to avoid air locks which will cause the tub to trip.
Over time and usage, spa water can become ‘stale’. Eventually it becomes necessary to drain and refill your hot tub. Draining is a simple matter of unscrewing the drain valve which sits just below the cabinet on the tub. The advice from BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) is that you do this every 2-3 months.
It’s also a good idea to use a flush product as part of the draining process in order to clean the pipes. This should be done every 6-12 months, depending on usage.
Make sure that water containing chemicals (namely chlorine, algaecides and sodium thiosulphate) is not released into septic tanks or allowed to drain into water courses.
If you’re filling the hot tub in winter when the weather is cold, it can be a good idea to use some hot water in order to prevent the spa from switching on to ice protection mode. Begin filling with cold water first, and then add hot water to bring the temperature up to 8 degrees. Once the tub gets up to temperature you can start filling cold again. It’s important to fill the tub in this way as hot water poured directly onto the acrylic can cause delamination.
